Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen is one of the most important temples on the Thonburi side of Bangkok and combines old canal community history with one of the city's newest religious landmarks.
Although the temple dates back to the Ayutthaya period, Wat Paknam became internationally famous in recent years because of its massive golden Buddha statue rising above the canals and neighborhoods of western Bangkok.
About the Temple
The Phasi Charoen area was historically an important canal community where waterways served as the main transportation network long before modern roads existed.
Even today, the neighborhoods surrounding Wat Paknam still preserve parts of old Thonburi life, with canals, local markets, and traditional communities remaining around the temple.
Giant Buddha and Glass Pagoda
The most recognizable feature today is Phra Phutthathamkayathepmonkhon, the giant golden Buddha statue that towers above the Thonburi skyline.
The statue can be seen from many parts of western Bangkok and has quickly become one of the modern visual symbols of Thonburi.
Wat Paknam offers a very different atmosphere from the royal temples around Bangkok's old city.
Another highlight inside the temple complex is the emerald-colored glass pagoda decorated with intricate ceilings and glowing interior details.
The atmosphere inside feels very different from traditional Thai temple halls and has become one of the most photographed spots inside the temple.
One of Bangkok's largest modern Buddha statues.
Known for its emerald glass interior and detailed ceiling.
Surrounded by old Thonburi neighborhoods and waterways.
Old Canal Community
Unlike many tourist-heavy temple areas in central Bangkok, Wat Paknam still feels closely connected to local life.
Walking through nearby alleys and canal-side areas, visitors can still see old wooden houses, local shops, and daily life continuing around the temple grounds.
Late afternoon is considered the best time to visit because sunlight reflects beautifully against the golden Buddha while the weather becomes cooler.
In recent years, the temple has also become a popular photography location because the giant Buddha creates a dramatic contrast against the canals and surrounding city skyline.
