Phra Pathom Chedi is one of the most important religious landmarks in Thailand and the defining symbol of Nakhon Pathom.

Its enormous golden chedi can be seen from across the city and has become one of the most recognizable Buddhist monuments in central Thailand.

About the Chedi

Beyond its massive scale, Phra Pathom Chedi holds deep historical importance because Nakhon Pathom is closely connected to the Dvaravati period, one of the earliest Buddhist cultures in the region.

The name "Phra Pathom Chedi" is associated with beliefs about the arrival of Buddhism in Suvarnabhumi, although historians and archaeologists continue to study and debate details from this early era.

Dvaravati and Early Buddhism

The current structure was heavily restored during the reign of King Rama IV after the ancient ruined chedi was rediscovered.

A giant Sri Lankan-style chedi was later constructed over the original structure, creating the massive monument seen today.

Living Local Landmark

Still deeply connected to daily local life in Nakhon Pathom.

With a height of more than 100 meters, Phra Pathom Chedi is considered one of the tallest Sri Lankan-style chedis in the world.

The temple complex also contains important Buddha images, historic artifacts, and architecture reflecting both Rattanakosin and Sri Lankan Buddhist influences.

Local Atmosphere

Unlike many temple attractions in Bangkok, the atmosphere around Phra Pathom Chedi still feels strongly local.

In the evening, residents often gather around the temple area to eat, shop, relax, and enjoy the local night market surrounding the chedi.

For many visitors, Phra Pathom Chedi is not only a religious site, but also a place where early Buddhist history and local Thai life still connect together.

Visitor Information

Phra Pathom Chedi is located about 1 to 1.5 hours from Bangkok and can be reached by train, van, or private car.

Nakhon Pathom Railway Station is located within walking distance of the temple. Evening is one of the best times to visit because the weather is cooler and the surrounding market becomes lively.
