Wat Pho is one of Bangkok's oldest and most important temples, known internationally for its giant Reclining Buddha and deep connection to Thai traditional knowledge.
Located near the Grand Palace and Tha Tien, the temple combines religion, history, art, and traditional medicine in one of the most culturally important sites in Thailand.
Historic Temple of Bangkok
The temple existed before Bangkok officially became the capital and was later restored extensively during the reign of King Rama I after the establishment of Rattanakosin.
Today, Wat Pho remains one of the largest temple complexes in Bangkok, filled with chedis, murals, prayer halls, and historic structures spread across a surprisingly large area.
The Reclining Buddha
The most famous attraction inside Wat Pho is the giant Reclining Buddha housed inside its own viharn.
The statue measures around 46 meters long and 15 meters high, making it one of the most recognizable Buddha images in Thailand.
The feet of the Reclining Buddha are decorated with mother-of-pearl illustrations representing 108 auspicious symbols in Buddhist tradition.
Many visitors are surprised by the scale of the statue once they enter the hall. The gold surfaces, detailed decorations, and narrow viewing space create a dramatic atmosphere unlike most temples in Bangkok.
Thai Massage and Knowledge
Wat Pho is also historically important as a center of traditional Thai medicine and massage.
Stone inscriptions and educational diagrams inside the temple preserve knowledge related to medicine, massage, and traditional sciences. These inscriptions were later recognized by UNESCO under the Memory of the World Programme.

Historic center of traditional Thai massage knowledge.
Large temple grounds filled with chedis and murals.
Today, Wat Pho continues to operate one of Thailand's best-known traditional massage schools, attracting both Thai and international visitors interested in Thai wellness culture.
Visitor Information
Wat Pho can be reached easily from MRT Sanam Chai with a short walk through the old city area.
Many travelers combine Wat Pho with the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, and Wat Arun in the same day. The temple can become very hot during midday, so late afternoon is often more comfortable for walking.
