Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of the most important landmarks in Chiang Mai and is often the first temple travelers think of when visiting northern Thailand.

Built on the slopes of Doi Suthep mountain overlooking the city, the temple is both a sacred pilgrimage site for Lanna Buddhists and one of Chiang Mai's most famous viewpoints.

About the Temple

The road to the temple winds through the forests and hills of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park before reaching the temple complex high above Chiang Mai.

The cooler weather and mountain atmosphere make the area feel very different from the city below, especially during the early morning and winter season.

Legend of the White Elephant

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep was built in the late 14th century during the Lanna Kingdom and is connected to one of Chiang Mai's most famous religious legends.

According to local belief, a sacred Buddha relic was placed on the back of a white elephant, which climbed Doi Suthep mountain, circled the area, trumpeted three times, and collapsed near the summit. The site was then chosen for the construction of the temple.

For many people in Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep is more than a tourist attraction. It is a spiritual symbol of the city itself.

What to See

The most important part of the temple is the golden Lanna-style chedi at the center of the courtyard, surrounded by bells, shrines, and prayer areas.

Visitors often walk clockwise around the chedi while listening to temple bells and Buddhist chanting.

City Viewpoint

Panoramic views over Chiang Mai and surrounding mountains.

Another famous highlight is the long naga staircase at the entrance, decorated with green and gold serpent figures in traditional Lanna style.

The temple is also one of the most popular viewpoints in Chiang Mai, especially during sunrise, sunset, and after rainfall when visibility is especially clear.

Visitor Information

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is about 30 to 45 minutes from Chiang Mai city depending on traffic and weather conditions.

Visitors can drive, join a tour, or take a red songthaew from the Chiang Mai University area. An elevator is available for those who do not want to climb the naga staircase.
