Chao Sam Phraya National Museum is one of the most important museums in Ayutthaya and one of the best places in Thailand for understanding the rise, wealth, and artistic achievements of the Ayutthaya Kingdom.

Located near Ayutthaya Historical Park, the museum is especially famous for its collection of royal gold treasures and artifacts discovered inside ancient temple crypts.

About the Museum

The museum was established during the 1960s after important archaeological discoveries in Ayutthaya, especially at Wat Ratchaburana and Wat Mahathat.

Its name comes from King Borommarachathirat II, also known as Chao Sam Phraya, one of the early kings of Ayutthaya.

Ayutthaya Gold Treasures

The museum is best known for its extraordinary gold treasure collection from Wat Ratchaburana.

Many of these objects were discovered after illegal treasure hunters secretly entered the crypt beneath the temple during the 1950s. The incident became one of the most important archaeological cases in modern Thai history, leading to official excavations and preservation efforts.

For many visitors, the gold room is the highlight of Ayutthaya because it reveals the wealth and craftsmanship of the former Siamese capital in a way that ruined temples alone cannot.

What to See Inside

Inside the museum, visitors can see gold ornaments, Buddha images, ceramics, inscriptions, weapons, and royal artifacts from different periods of Ayutthaya history.

One of the most impressive sections is the gold treasure hall, where delicate jewelry and ceremonial objects demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship during the Ayutthaya period.

Buddhist Art

Historic Buddha images and sculptures from different Thai kingdoms.

Ayutthaya History

Artifacts that help explain the rise and fall of the former capital.

Unlike walking through temple ruins outside, the museum allows visitors to see the objects that once existed inside Ayutthaya's royal temples and palace structures.

For travelers interested in Thai history, archaeology, or Buddhist art, this museum adds important context to the experience of exploring Ayutthaya Historical Park.

Visitor Information

The museum is located close to Wat Mahathat, Wat Ratchaburana, and other important sites inside Ayutthaya Historical Park.

Most visitors spend around 1 to 2 hours exploring the museum, although history enthusiasts often stay longer because of the large collection.
