Wat Chaiwatthanaram is one of the most beautiful and recognizable temples in Ayutthaya. The large central prang beside the Chao Phraya River has become one of the defining images of the former capital of Siam.
Today, the temple is especially popular among travelers looking for sunset views, historical ruins, and one of the best photography spots in Ayutthaya.
About the Temple
Wat Chaiwatthanaram was built in 1630 during the reign of King Prasat Thong and is believed to have been dedicated to his mother.
The temple stands on the western side of Ayutthaya Historical Park beside the river, creating a very different atmosphere from temples inside the old city center.
Architecture and History
The temple is famous for its symmetrical layout with a large central prang surrounded by smaller towers and chedis.
Its architecture was influenced by Khmer design and Buddhist cosmology, making the temple visually different from many other Ayutthaya temples.
Located beside the Chao Phraya River on the west side of Ayutthaya.
Features architecture inspired by Khmer temple design.
Part of Ayutthaya Historical Park since 1991.
Although heavily damaged after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, much of the main structure still survives today. Visitors can still walk around ancient corridors, Buddha statue bases, and brick walls that reflect the scale of the old kingdom.
Best Time to Visit
Late afternoon is considered the best time to visit Wat Chaiwatthanaram. As the sun begins to set, warm orange light reflects against the ancient brick structures and creates one of the most photogenic scenes in Ayutthaya.
The temple is also very popular with visitors wearing traditional Thai outfits for photography sessions.
Sunset is the most popular time for photography at Wat Chaiwatthanaram.
Visitor Information
Wat Chaiwatthanaram can be reached from Bangkok in around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on transportation.
Many travelers combine the visit with Wat Mahathat and Wat Phra Si Sanphet during the same trip. The site can become very hot during midday, so carrying water, a hat, or an umbrella is recommended.
