Wat Rong Khun is one of the most famous landmarks in Chiang Rai and one of the best known examples of contemporary Buddhist architecture in Thailand.

Unlike traditional Thai temples, the entire complex is covered in white with mirrored details that reflect sunlight across the buildings, making the temple instantly recognizable.

About the White Temple

Originally a small local temple, Wat Rong Khun was rebuilt in its current form in 1997 by Chalermchai Kositpipat, a nationally recognized artist from Chiang Rai.

The project was designed as a large scale artwork combining Buddhist philosophy, Thai symbolism, and modern artistic interpretation.

Symbolism and Design

While many Thai temples are decorated in gold, Wat Rong Khun uses white to symbolize purity and wisdom.

Small mirrored pieces embedded throughout the structures reflect sunlight and represent enlightenment according to Buddhist concepts.

One of the temple's most memorable features is the bridge leading toward the main ubosot. Visitors walk past hundreds of sculpted hands reaching upward from below, symbolizing greed, suffering, and worldly desire before entering a sacred space representing spiritual liberation.

Wat Rong Khun feels part temple and part surreal art installation, yet every detail is still connected to Buddhist ideas and symbolism.

What to See

White Ubosot

Golden Building

A contrasting gold structure representing materialism and worldly desire.

The temple complex also mixes religious symbolism with references to modern culture, making it very different from historical temples found elsewhere in Thailand.

Another famous highlight is the golden building inside the complex, intentionally designed to contrast with the white ubosot and symbolize attachment to material wealth.

Wat Rong Khun remains under continuous construction and expansion, with plans expected to continue for decades.

Today, the temple is not only one of Chiang Rai's most visited attractions but also an important example of how contemporary Thai Buddhist art continues to evolve.

Visitor Information

Wat Rong Khun is located about 20 minutes from central Chiang Rai and can be reached by taxi, Grab, private car, or local transport.
